CHARLIE ACCUSED OF ATTEMPTED MURDER!

There's no other way to view it. On Friday night, Charlie, Harry and Myles were playing along nicely, getting into the last set at the Baltimore Yacht Club. It had been a nice, easy job, no problems, just lots of good music and drink.

So shortly into the last set, I saw one of "those looks" flash across Charlie's face. He called one song, and before it finished, called another, which was a medley of about 5 songs. We just played from one right into the next. At the end of the medley, I swear I saw a sneer on Charlie's face as he looked at us, calling for a modulation across about 5 different keys; then he directed us straight into another medley. Without stopping. 4 or 5 songs later, there was that sneer again, but tinged with a wry smile beneath narrowing eyes. I swear I heard him give an evil laugh. More modulations, and into another song we went. That was how it went all set - even through a rather lengthy section of songs I'd never even heard before.

When I was released from the hospital the next morning, they said something about a cerebral overload - too much thinking while playing.

And as every good player knows, that can be life-threatening.

This does not suprise me. Just think of all the great medleys to hit this town. They all came from Charlie - i.e. in Staggerwing their was the Yes and Kansas medley. Of late there is the funk medley. Charlie has the uncanny ability to group songs together that you would initially think they do not go together but after hearing it you think "Wow, that actually worked."
